Yildirim Palabiyik has been crafting ouds in Izmir since 1994 — three decades of dedicated luthiery centered on a singular pursuit: capturing the distinct sonic characters of both the Turkish and Arabic oud traditions in instruments that hold their own across both worlds.

His workshop pays particular attention to tonewood selection: aged spruce soundboards paired with premium rosewood for the bowl and sides. These are not aesthetic choices — they are acoustic decisions that give his ouds the rich, warm fundamentals and depth of resonance that distinguish them. The instruments age gracefully, gaining character with use rather than losing it.

A Palabiyik oud is built to be played. Neck profiles are shaped for comfort and stability in equal measure, supporting taqsim improvisation, fast passages, and the long sustained phrases that define both Anatolian and Arabic repertoires. The setup respects the player as much as the maker — instruments that reward technique without demanding compromise.

Yildirim’s ouds are chosen by performing musicians who work the tradition daily, including Ibrahim Genco and Samet Baybars Noyan. His own work is documented on Instagram, where new builds and workshop process are shared. Each instrument reflects three decades of refinement: tonewood, geometry, and the quiet patience of a luthier who has learned what makes an oud sing in two musical languages at once.
